Tall Boot Zipper Care

Tall boot zippers are prone to acting up. Here’s some advice on how to make yours last!
Zippers are a game changer for wearing tall boots, but they come with the challenge of keeping them functioning properly. The first rule of thumb with any zipper is to never force it open or closed. Tall boot zippers can be extra finicky because they are placed in a position of stress that may cause the zipper to split open and fail. It’s a common problem across all brands, so Mary’s Tack and Feed has some tips to increase your zipper’s lifespan.
Identify Your Zipper Type
Depending on the size of the teeth, some tall boot zippers might be more prone to breaking than others. For example, boots with smaller zipper teeth provide a clean, upscale aesthetic, but may be more prone to getting stuck, while boots with larger zipper teeth tend to be more resilient. Many tall boots like Ariat Devon Tall Boots , DeNiro Italo Boots, and EGO7 Aries Dress Boots use YKK zippers, which are known for their durability. When trying on new tall boots, you can tell by the zipper tab if it's a YKK zipper. Regardless of brand, it's still good practice to take your time to stretch the elastic gusset of your boots as you zip. This ensures that the zipper tab isn’t pulled too far sideways and won’t run the risk of splitting open or getting stuck.
Break Your Boots in Gently; Be Patient!
Using stretch spray, such as Ariat Boot Spray, encourages the the tall boot's leather to relax. Over time, the boot will adjust to fit your calf and the zipper will open and close more smoothly. Wearing your boots for a few hours a day at home will help your boots expand and relieve strain on the zipper teeth before you jump in the irons and put those boots to work with your active riding leg.
Keep Your Zippers Clean
Just like the rest of your boots, zippers need to be cleaned regularly to prevent any premature damage. Dry debris and dust are easy to brush off with a soft brush or cloth. Avoid using leather care products on the zipper because they will attract dirt and debris. This will clog the zipper teeth, causing them to stick, bend, and possibly break.
TIP: If your zipper ever gets stuck and needs cleaning, Mary’s offers Hypofekt zipper cleaner to clean and oil zipper teeth.
Zip Up Your Boots at an Acute Angle
To make sure the zipper teeth stay aligned, angle the zipper tab to follow the natural curve of your leg. Pulling too hard, or pulling away from the leg is the quickest way for a zipper to break. A simple way to achieve this is with a boot zip tool, such as the Kavalkade Boot Zip Aid.
TIP: Zip aids should be used gently. Do not force the zipper and use extra care with zippers that have smaller gauge teeth. If you are unsure about using this tool or any product on your boots, check with the manufacturer and follow their recommendation.
When you are not wearing your boots, place a boot tree such as Ariat Boot Trees within the leg of your tall boot. This prevents creases that might cause a zipper tab to catch.
Boot bags, such as the Hever Equestrian Boot Bag, or LeMieux Luxe Boot Bag are great for providing a barrier for moisture, sunlight, and debris and will protect until you need them again.
Have a Backup Pair of Tall Boots
If you are competing and relying on your tall boots for a busy horse show season, it’s wise to have a backup pair of boots in the event of a zipper malfunction.
Sending your boots to be repaired is not always a guaranteed service. Most tall boot manufacturers will only repair a failed zipper within 90 days of purchase. Also repair takes time, so it’s a good idea to have a spare set of tall boots at your disposal while the first pair is being fixed.
Thankfully, with a little effort and the right tools, your tall boot zippers should be capable of working effectively for years to come!
