Posted by Mary's Tack and Feed on 10th Jun 2026
Fly season is in full swing, so now’s the time to stock up at Mary’s and refresh your arsenal of fly masks, fly sprays, fly traps, and more! It doesn’t matter if your horse lives in a stable, or kept out at pasture, they’re at risk of bites and infections from flies, mosquitoes, and other parasites. Luckily, Mary’s Tack and Feed has a whole array of equine fly protection products at your disposal.
Fly Spray and Fly Repellent:
Mary’s has a vast assortment of fly repellents. There are holistic fly sprays that use natural botanical bug repellents, sweat resistant fly sprays, feed-through fly repellents, and more! Many fly sprays also come with a cost-effective refill gallon, so you can reuse your spray bottle and save money on your favorite fly spray. Let’s break down the list for what these fly sprays and repellents do best.
Mary’s is proud to introduce Absorbine’s latest fly repelling technology, Ultra Shield Gold. Using FlyShield® technology, this spray disorients flies and over 100 parasitic insects to prevent them from landing on your horse. Farnam is also releasing Endure Gold fly spray with exceptional and long lasting fly repelling technology, so keep a look out because this will be arriving soon!
Botanical and Natural Fly Repellents:
Holistic fly sprays are a popular choice because they use scents and essential oils that naturally repel flies. They are gentle on the skin, and can even help condition the horse’s coat!
Here’s the list of our favorite botanical fly sprays:
- Lavender Dreams
- Wipe II with Citronella
- Flysect Citronella
- Ultra Shield Green
- Equifuse Essential
- Espree
- Pyranha Zero Bite
- Natures Force
Sweat Resistant Fly Repellents:
These equine fly repellents behave exactly the way you’d expect. These are long lasting, and can protect your horse for days at a time. These sweat resistant repellents are great for hot days.
Water Based Fly Repellents:
Some fly sprays leave a greasy residue that stays on the horse’s coat for a long time. While this provides long-term protection, it can be difficult to wash off. Here are some water-based fly sprays that don’t leave behind any residue.
Insecticides:
These fly sprays include horse-safe insecticides that are fast-acting and both repel and kill flies and other parasites. Many of these include coat conditioners, and sunscreen, and while they are super effective at killing bugs, they won’t harm your horse.
Additional Fly Repellent Products:
There are also non-spray fly repellents that are convenient for using on horses that don’t like sprays, or if you want a convenient way to apply fly repellent to your horse’s face. Pyranha’s Equine Roll-On, or Farnam’s Roll-On fly repellent can be conveniently applied on or around sensitive or hard-to-reach places on your horse.
For horses with any sort of open wound that may attract flies, try out our SWAT products. SWAT Original Fly Repellent Ointment is a popular brand of fly repelling ointment that soothes irritation caused by fly bites, and can be applied around (but not directly in) any open wound.
Not all fly repellents come in a bottle. Try feed-through fly repellent that can be added into your horse’s daily supplement. Feeds like SimpliFly and Solitude prevent flies from developing as eggs in horse manure, stopping the spread of flies before a problem starts.
Fly Deflecting Horse Clothing:
Products like fly masks, fly boots, and fly sheets are a great form of protection because they create a physical barrier between flies and your horse. They repel flies without using pesticides or harsh chemicals, and provide sun protection for horses with sensitive skin.
Fly Masks:
Lycra Masks are useful for horses that have learned how to undo velcro. They’re made with minimal seams and soft Lycra that stretches to fit your horse’s face. This is a great option for horses that get rubs from rougher fly mask mesh. They also come in an assortment of fun summer colors! Check out the cool navy Comfitec Deluxe Stretch Fly Mask, or Navajo Comfitec Stretch Fly Mask from Weatherbeeta. There’s also the Weaver Coolcore Lycra Fly Mask and the Professionals Choice Comfort Fit Lycra Fly Mask that offer more patterns with the same comfort for your horse.
Standard velcro fly masks are popular because they are easy to put on and take off, easy to clean, and protect your horse’s sensitive eyes and ears from flies. For fly season, Mary’s stocks an assortment of styles, sizes, and colors to suit horses, foals, and even donkeys and mules.
One of our most popular fly mask brands is Cashel, which supplies Crusader Fly Masks, fly masks with ears, and fly masks with long noses. Masks can be grey, blue, pink, or orange–but be sure to snag the colors early because they sell out fast! Another popular brand of fly mask is Kensington, with UV protection technology from the Uviator Dartless Fly Mask, as well as the tried-and-true Kensington Fly Mask which also comes in an assortment of colors and patterns to suit your horse.
For more fun patterns and colors, check out fly masks from Makey like the Modern Vintage Fly Mask or the Bee Mine Fly Mask. There’s also Horseware with the Newmarket Fly Mask, which comes with ears or without. These fleece lined fly masks are extra comfy as well as stylish.
Mary’s carries fly boots in all sorts of sizes and styles. Like the Cashel Crusader Fly Boots, which come in grey, pink, blue, and orange. Horseware Newmarket Fly Boots provides both comfort and style with blue plaid patterning as well as soft, fleecy lining.
Some horses are fussy about fly boots, so trying something like Weatherbeeta’s Comfitec Dura-Mesh Fly Wraps can help protect your horse from flies and gnats, and create minimal contact with the horse’s leg. This also comes in a set of four, so all four legs are protected with one easy purchase.
Fly Sheets:
Fly sheets are a lightweight mesh that provide full body fly protection from chest to rump. Some fly sheets come with neck covers and belly wraps as well. Fly sheets also provide extra sun protection, preventing your horse’s coat from getting bleached and their skin from getting burned.
For heavy-duty fly protection, the Weatherbeeta Comfitec Airflow Fly Sheet has a belly band, and neck cover made of soft, breathable mesh that protects your horse without overheating.
Comfitec Essential Fly Sheet has similar features to the Airflow sheet–including 75% UV blocking technology–however its design is more in line with typical fly sheets and doesn’t come with a belly band.
Professional’s Choice Theramic Fly Sheet is another high-tech sheet that uses ceramic fibers to provide therapeutic benefits. This sheet has anti-inflammatory properties and repels heat, so your horse beats the heat and the flies. It also comes with a Theramic Fly Neck Cover for added coverage.
Horseware also offers full body fly protection with the Amigo Bug Rug Fly Sheet. This full body fly sheet comes with a neck cover that goes over the horse’s head, allowing seamless coverage between the neck cover and fly mask. It also comes with elongated side panels, a tail cover, and covers the belly to fully shield your horse from flies. This is another soft mesh that it designed for comfort and breathability.
Fly sheets are known for their grey coloring, so let’s liven things up with some patterned equine fly sheets. The Amigo Bug Rug has a summer-y dragonfly print and 65% UV protection, protecting your horse from more than just bugs while looking super cute as well! Kensington has a collection of colorful sheets, including Sure Fit Protective Sheet, and the SureFit Upgraded Protective Sheet.
A barn full of flies is annoying and unsanitary. That’s why it’s good to keep a collection of fly traps and repellents on hand as the weather gets warmer.
Sticky fly traps like the Lure-Fly Fly Catcher, or Fly Stik from Starbar are easy to hang from the ceiling of a tack room, or barn. The tape attracts flies and other pests and the sticky coating keeps them stuck to the tape and not on your horse! For a larger sticky trap option try Rescue’s Outdoor Fly Trapstik which has a large surface area that increases the trap’s lifespan. These traps are odor-free and don’t use harmful pesticides, making them safe to keep around people and animals.
Water-filled fly traps are another simple fly prevention solution, just fill the bags with water and hang them around the barn, or pasture fence. Mary’s offers a selection of traps like the Rescue Big Bag Disposable Fly Trap, which can trap up to 40,000 flies before being replaced. If you want to reduce waste, there’s the Rescue Fly Trap Max that comes in a reusable container.
Controlling pests like flies, mosquitoes and ticks is a great way to prevent disease during the hotter months. Keeping your horses up to date on their vaccines will help as well, and of course stocking up on plenty of fly sprays, refill gallons, and fly gear from Mary’s Tack and Feed!
