Kong Dog Toys is a company built on one man's love and concern for his dog. Joe Markham owned a retired police dog named Fritz who had the bad habit of chewing things he wasn't supposed to chew. Fritz' destructive chewing included rocks and sticks, which wore down his teeth and did not satisfy his innate need to chew. Joe was frustrated and worried about Fritz, whose teeth were getting damaged from his chewing habit. Joe's creation of Kong dog toys was inspired by accident. Joe was working on his car one day and trying to distract Fritz from chewing on rocks. Joe tossed a rubber suspension part to Fritz, who immediately enjoyed chewing the tough rubber material. He also liked how it bounced unpredictably when it was tossed, adding a playful element to the impromptu chew toy.
Joe was inspired to create a line of rubber toys crafted from a special pet-safe rubber that is meant to be chewed.
