Herm Sprenger Duo Mullen Mouth Dee

Posted by So far, so good on 25th Nov 2024

I bought this bit for my Andalusian with an excessive habit of chewing the bit, damaging his front molars. The Myler snaffle recommended by his equine dentist no longer worked; the horse learned how to flip it around to get his teeth on the bit. The damage found at this fall's visit was worse than ever. In desperation I tried a Happy Mouth Mullen loose-ring snaffle but it was too thick for my horse's comfort, not legal for dressage competition, too rigid for lateral work, and too unstable due to the loose rings. This Herm Sprenger Duo solves those problems. It's thinner (16 mm or 5/8") with a tad of tongue relief for comfort, flexible enough to allow lateral cues, and Dee rings that stay put. The horse accepted the bit immediately, salivating very freely and not even trying to grab it and bite down. People think of Mullen mouth bits as only for youngsters, but they can be a good solution for well-schooled horses with sensitive mouths or a preference for a very stable bit.

This is the only bit my OTTB likes. I have tried many and he just relaxes with this. I may have to sand it down because it does get a bit rough in spots from his chewing, but totally worth it.
