Espoir Equestrian has grown from a small start-up company to a brand that is trusted by fellow equestrians to produce beautiful tack and apparel. Carolyn van Schalkwyk founded Espoir in South Africa in 2015, combining her passion for horses and design in a new business. Espoir is French for hope, the defining strength of those who strive for bigger things and have challenges along the way.
When Carolyn decided to forego an architecture career to found Espoir Equestrian, she relied on hope to keep moving forward. In the early days, Carolyn not only designed the products, she photographed them, packed them, and marketed them to fellow equestrians. Starting a business in South Africa had unique challenges and Carolyn had to learn and grow by doing.
Espoir Equestrian came to North America in 2021 and is now Florida, USA based. Carolyn is still passionate about designing innovative items focused on horse and rider. As an architecture student, Carolyn knows that form follows function so her products are ergonomically shaped for movement, protection, and comfort.
