BAKER/CURVON
The Baker Blanket had a complicated journey from its origins in 1866 but its quality and performance assured its survival. Developed by the S.W. Baker Company of Providence, Rhode Island, this Evaporating Horse Blanket was made to cool out a sweaty horse. The S.W. Baker Company created the original 5/A Baker Blanket description and illustration that you can still see on the Baker red tag logo. The S.W. Baker Co. eventually closed shop and sold the Baker brand name to William Ayres & Sons Co. of Philadelphia. The triple weave plaid blanket (today's Original Plaid Baker Blanket grew in popularity with a loyal following. There were several company changes over the years and eventually the Baker. brand was acquired by the Curvon Horse Clothing Company in 1990.
Curvon is the oldest horse clothing company still in operation in the United States. Originally called the Curtis and von Bernuth Manufacturing Company, the names were combined in 1935 to Curvon. Many of the Baker horse clothing products are made in the USA. Baker Original Blankets and Sheets are immediately recognizable for the handsome tan and black plaid as well as the newer green tartan plaid. The Baker horse blankets, turnouts, and sheets all bear the Baker red logo tag that assures authenticity.
Baker blankets use a triple weave fabric that is incredibly durable as well as beautiful.
Over the years the Baker line has expanded and the products updated. For example, horse owner feedback led to the addition of acrylic fibers to prevent blanket shrinkage. Many show barns choose the Baker blankets for all their horses and as the basis for their barn colors.
