If you look closely at the photo, you'll see that one edge of the bit is soft and rounded and the other has an angled edge. For a soft bit, place the soft edge against the tongue; for a stronger bit, place the angled edge against the tongue. The bit has a "+" sign at one end so you'll always know which side you're using before you mount - when the + sign is visible on the horse's left side, the strong side is in use.
